nation.

The chiefs of the military party are, as a whole, staunch supporters without whose aid the scheme must fail. The Provincial Generals have nearly all been lately received in Audience by the President, and, although what transpired at the Audiences has not been published, the reports in ciroulation both in Feking and Tientsin are that the establishment of a Monarchy was discussed.

It is not anticipated that there will be any trouble in North China but quoh a political upheaval could hardly make for peace and quiet in those parts of the Republie removed from Peking influence.

An article in the "Peking and Tientsin Times" states that during the last meeting at the Administrative Headquarters Minister Liang TungTen, of the Ministry of Communications, proposed the extension of the present railways so as to form four main trunk lines.

The Peking- Mukden line is to extend to Tsitsihar, via Chinchow and

Taonan and form the East trunk line. The Peking-Hankow line extended to Canton will form the Southern trunk line, the line running from Cheng-tai Westward to Tung-pu and Ili, via Shensi and Kaneu is to be the West trunk line, while the Peking - Kalgan line extended to Kiatehta will form the Northern trunk line.

The "North China Herald" of August 28th publishes an article dated at Peking the 21st August to the effect that the Japanese Legation has agreed to remove the light railway a constructed during the campaign against Tsingtau and also to dismantle the wireless at Lungkow. Japan has also promised

to withdraw the troops stationed at various points between

Lungkow and Kiomi.
